Gotham Knights, the new open-world game from Warner Bros. Montreal, developer of Arkham Origins, due out in October, takes a very different take on Batman’s Gotham City, offering a more legendary and historical take on the devastated metropolis for the crime that Christopher Nolan. Trilogy “The Dark Knight” or “Batman” with Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson.

In Gotham Knights, Gotham City, like the real New York City, is divided into five boroughs: North Gotham, Gotham Below, Historic Gotham, Downtown Gotham, and New Gotham. Each district is ruled by one of the city’s historic founding families, including the hardworking Cobblepots who recently rose to Penguin fame and the sinister and manipulative Arkhams. Developer Warner Bros. Montreal’s intention is to offer a subtle and ecological story about how the city was created.

Some areas will be modernized and developed, while others will retain their original 18th and 19th century architecture or fall into disrepair. In Gotham Knights, the city of the same name has a history spanning over 400 years and is closely tied to the mysterious Illuminati-like Court of Owls, which apparently controls Gotham from the shadows.

It’s an interesting contrast to previous versions of Batman we’ve seen in games and movies. Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy is a decidedly modern and slick metropolis, while director Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s Batman make Gotham more decrepit and ancient, a semi-impoverished former rust belt crossed by steam-powered Victorian London. and coal. Gotham Knights is a bit of all of that, but from what we’ve seen so far, it’s also somewhat unique.

Warner Bros. Montreal says that in addition to a vast and expressive open world game park, they are trying to create a convincing impression of a city that has evolved over the centuries.

“We began to think about the main events in the history of [Court of Owls] I would have reacted,” Patrick Redding, creative director for Gotham Knights, told IGN. “All of these ideas are part of the conversation and allow us to create layers of history.”

“We’ve created a very large Gotham City,” adds Senior Design Director Christopher McMahan. “But what makes Gotham Knights unique is the density. The families were there. They built towering structures in their neighborhoods. And then we build around that. There are a lot of areas that are a bit stuck in time.”
