Comic Review Batman / Fortnite – Point Zero #2

Two weeks ago, I was excited about how the first part of the expected crossover between The Dark Knight and the most popular video game of our time went. The biggest surprise of the first book was that in a relatively small space of only twenty pages, it was able to offer the full storyline (with subsequent spoilers of part 1): from the introduction of the characters to the main event (the mysterious storm). teleported Batman to an island battlefield in Fortnite where he lost his memory and voice) to a fateful encounter with Catwoman, an epic battle, and a touching finale where the two heroes die in each other’s arms in the midst of an oncoming storm. However, I was looking forward to Part 2 with some concerns as to whether the creators could continue this impressive introduction in the same strong way.

There are two of us

In a sense, the second part is just that cool moment when the hero already realized that he was faced with a serious threat and began to work hard on investigating it, and then used the knowledge he gained to fight the all-consuming storm that returns every 22 minutes. Batman really works here as a detective who leaves himself messages written on his suit (which reminded me of the brilliant film “Remember” directed by The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan), but also builds a small base, which he always directs with the help of written coordinates.

But the best idea in the second part is that the creators continue to focus on Batman’s relationship with Catwoman – although they both lost their memory, their feelings clearly remain, and together they form a strong couple, determined to fight the island’s murderous storms. till the last breath. Since they both die several times in the second part, the comic quite successfully repeats unexpectedly dark and touching moments when, for example, Catwoman is killed “prematurely” by a sniper, and Batman succumbs to a devastating fit of rage. In the second part, one certainly cannot deny strong emotions, even though none of the characters can speak.

Sniper kills Catwoman and Batman goes on a rampage.

But it would not be for Batman not to find a way out of the whole impasse, despite all the tragedies and hardships. Through gradual experimentation, he and his partner eventually discover that one “winner” has a chance to weather the storm and possibly make it off the island. But there is a dilemma, because this means that one of our couple will have to sacrifice something for the sake of the other. Probably, it is not necessary to explain that the finale of the second part is again a decent milkman, and the creators once again surprised by choosing such an impressive style instead of some kind of children’s comedy or action movie.

Story for adults

And that’s exactly what keeps me away from comics along with high quality drawings that also stand out thanks to high quality paper. While I personally love the story in the Fortnite: Save The World campaign, I feel a bit sorry for his light-hearted comedy style that makes it miss out on the real drama. However, this comic still completely lacks any comedic aspects, and instead tells a traditionally dark Batman story, more suitable for teenagers or adults.

Like the previous issue, the second book also has a new code to unlock the skin right in the Fortnite game. This time it’s Batman’s glider in the form of “bat” wings with his logo, the opening of which is accompanied by the effect of flying a flock of bats. To be sure, the only way to get the item is to log into your Epic account at fortnite.com/redeem and enter the code hidden under a sticker in the magazine. By the way, if you received a workbook wrapped in the original foil, then the code will not work for you is almost impossible. Most likely, you misread the code (for example, G is often replaced by 6, etc.).

If you’re into comics, you’ve probably noticed that the first part was hopelessly sold out. But now Crew has the good news that they have been able to negotiate additional codes directly with DC and Epic, so that the first set will be re-released at the end of May, apparently finally in quantities that really satisfy all interested parties. This is very good, because in the meantime, dealers have sold the first laptop online for several times its cost. It always makes me very sad when someone makes money like this from the diligence of the fans. But with the re-release approaching, perhaps this will be stopped. However, if you are interested in this six part series, you should order it as soon as possible. There is a good chance that specialty stores will sell more issues, and finding newsstands is also a dubious lottery.

The notebooks are published every 14 days, so the third volume is waiting for us on Wednesday, May 19th.
