The company apparently took its partners by surprise; journalists unwittingly announced RDNA 4.
At its CES conference, AMD announced several new processors that may be of interest to both gamers and content creators.
(Un)notice about RDNA 4
But before we move on to new products, the conference is dedicated to a rather strange thing – video cards. RDNA 4 was supposed to be one of the main materials of the presentation, but in the end graphics did not appear in it at all. Essentially, it was just mentioned that RDNA 4 (as well as FSR 4 technology) exists and that we will have more details later this quarter, that is, by the end of March.
While this was likely a last-minute change, not only the public was counting on the RDNA 4 presentation, but also the AMD partners attracted to the conference. Journalists were given at least basic information behind the scenes, so the graphics cards were mostly announced through their articles and videos, without expecting anything like this.
Models have already been presented Radeon RX 9070 And 9070 HTwhich they have arrive in the first quarter. RDNA 4 promises a significantly redesigned design optimized architecture, better AI compute performance, better ray tracing performance and better video encodingbut we don’t know any details about any of the aspects.
While we don’t know anything about performance officially, we can read a bit in the slide where AMD describes its graphics rebrand. Instead of hundreds, the performance level will now be indicated by a third digit, similar to how Nvidia does it. And AMD places its new graphics between the RX 7800 XT and 7900 XT, so from the older model we would they shouldn’t have expected better performance than the RTX 4070 Ti. At the same time, AMD also mentions models RS 9060which have not yet been announced.
At the same time, AMD confirmed to journalists the existence of the technology. FSR 4, we only know what it will bring upscaling based on machine learningsimilar to DLSS. For this reason, it looks like it will be exclusive to RDNA 4, but there is no official confirmation yet. Just a rather strange inscription at the bottom that only the RX 9070 will receive some kind of update with FSR 3.1. Does this mean that FSR 4 won’t need to be implemented in games that already have FSR 3? It’s hard to say.
Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D
And now to the actual statements at the conference. The first two new models were announced as part of the Ryzen 9000 generation of desktop processors with Zen 5 architecture. Late last year, the eight-core Ryzen 7 9800X3D appeared, which is clearly the best processor for gaming. However, it will soon have siblings that will follow the previous generation of multi-core models.
Firstly, this twelve-core Ryzen 9 9900X3D processorwhich will bring maximum frequency 5.5 GHz and 140 MB cache (L2 + L3, including V-Cache) on Thermal power 120 W. The company has not provided any information about the performance of this processor.
With the tallest model, everything is different. Ryzen 9 9950X3D With 16 cores. He promises frequency up to 5.7 GHz, 144 MB cachebut in Thermal power 170 W. On average, 40 games, according to internal testing, run on the new processor 20% more powerful than Core Ultra 9 285K. from Intel and 8% more powerful than its predecessor 7950X3D.. In terms of productivity applications, AMD promises an average of 10% better performance than Intel competitors and 13% more performance than the 7950X3D.
However, we do not know either the price or the exact release date of any processor. In any case, both models have we will arrive in March.
Ryzen Z2
At the conference, AMD continued to focus on laptops, which, by the way, will also receive their first X3D processors, but more interesting announcements came only from journalists. AMD presented SoC Ryzen Z2successor to the Z1 series, designed for gaming laptops, but this time there are 3 models built on the architecture Zen 5 with RDNA 3.5 graphics chip.
Top model Z2 Extreme will bring 8 coresfrequency up to 5 GHz, Cache 24 MB And 16 graphics cores V TDP from 15 to 35 W. Below Z2 (without Extreme) only differs slightly lower TDP (maximum 30 W)a fewer graphics coresnamely 12. However, the youngest model is still new Z2 Gowhich offers only 4 cores, 4.3 GHz frequency and 10 MB cache.
All models must be released in the first quarter. The question, of course, is when we will see them in the first devices.
