The Nintendo Switch has been around for over 7 years now, and the announcement of its successor is fast approaching. The hybrid console, which was already outdated when it launched, has managed to stay relevant in the marketplace throughout its lifetime, thanks largely to quality third-party games, and may even become the best-selling console of all time. Digital Foundry focuses on its games, as well as some third-party titles, in a new video where John Linneman and Oliver Mackenzie pick the most visually impressive Switch games.
The rankings outside of the top spot are not in exact order. In any case, among the games mentioned was Metroid Prime Remastered, which (among others) Linneman considers to be more of a visual remake. The remake of the first-person action game, originally released in 2002, attracted attention mainly due to its excellent lighting and stable frame rate of 60 FPS. Digital Foundry points to the game as a good example of the use of “baked” lighting, which must be fully prepared during development and cannot react dynamically. Incidentally, the selection also included a 2D game from the series, Metroid Dread.
Next up was Super Mario Bros. Wonder, last year’s 2D platformer that made the lists thanks to its original art style and fluid animation. Other Mario games were also mentioned, such as Paper Mario: The Origami King, Super Mario Odyssey, or the remake of Super Mario RPG.
There was room for ambitious open-world games, too, and the selection will probably surprise no one. The rating includes Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and both new parts of the Legend of Zelda series, subtitled Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
But which game took the top spot? It’s not one of the recent games, we have to go back to 2019 and, in particular, to the action-adventure Luigi’s Mansion 3 from Next Level Games. Linneman notes the beautiful lighting, shadows, quality of models and materials, as well as advanced physics, adding that the game feels like a game for more powerful devices.
What about you, which Switch game has caught your attention the most?
