Sony expects to release PlayStation 6 not earlier than in five years

Given the unavailability of consoles, there has been an informal discussion about extending the lifespan of current consoles. But as the latest document shows, Sony plans to stay in plus/minus in a rut and launch PlayStation 6 about eight years after PS5. Previous generations were separated by seven years.

2028 is from documents Sony has sent to the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in connection with Call of Duty and Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. Xbox has offered the PlayStation a 10-year deal, but Sony wants more. Although Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, has previously stated that Call of Duty will be released on the PlayStation as long as the PlayStation exists.

“Sony mentioned the next generation PlayStation in the CMA response, but hid the planned release year” according to analyst Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis, who spotted the information.

The mention of the next console was in a passage about the potential loss of Call of Duty after 2027. This implies that Sony plans to release the PlayStation 6 no earlier than 2027. The analyst is more inclined towards 2028.

The loss of Call of Duty would leave the PlayStation extremely vulnerable to client switching and reduce the console’s competitiveness, according to Sony..
