GDQ bans racer who rigged Metal Gear: Revengeance world record

UPDATE: GDQ has contacted PCGamesN to confirm that Mekarazium, which simulated the release of Revengeance, has been banned from future GDQ events. Our original story follows the GDQ statement:

“Yesterday we learned that Mekazarium showed off a segmented video for its DLC release at Summer Games Done Quick 2022,” says GDQ. “The Mekazarium has since admitted this both to some members of the community and directly to GDQ staff. He contacted our staff with a document detailing that he had been planning this for over a month, showing that it was planned and intentional. This was made possible by the remote nature of this particular marathon.

“This is completely unacceptable and attempts to undermine the integrity of the sprinting community that we love and support. It wasn’t clear from the document what exact outcome they wanted, but it’s clear they thought we wouldn’t want to talk about their behavior. However, we believe it is in the community’s interest to know why GDQ removed this release. We have removed the Mekazarium from our YouTube archives and will not allow it to function in the future.”

The Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance DLC World Speed Record unveiled at SGDQ 2022 was deemed fake as Russian gamer Mekarazium admits to using a pre-recorded video of the game instead of playing it live.

In a message to Games Done Quick’s compliance team, Mekarazium explains how his Blade Wolf race, which claims a new “record” time of six minutes and 55 seconds, was actually a pre-recorded segmented race running clips from the game. . individually and then assembled by editing to give the impression of a single continuous reproduction. Some games that appear on the official Speedrun leaderboards have a separate ranking for segmented races, as the skill and luck required to use each achievement or gain time throughout the game is often very high compared to individual levels of speedrun. the best, sprinters will wear segmented. careers. . to demonstrate what is theoretically possible in the game.

But the release of Mekarazium was announced as a full real-time replay offered to viewers as a reward for reaching one of the SGDQ donation levels. Instead of being streamed live on the SGDQ site in Minneapolis, Mekarazium’s race was streamed live from his own computer. Mekarazium credits this with allowing them to replace the pre-produced, segmented real-time display.

“The promotional release of Blade Wolf DLC that people are paying for is a pre-recorded segmented release,” Mekarazium writes to the GDQ team. “I did not mention this anywhere, neither during the submission process nor in the email I sent to [GDQ] Committee. It was supposed to be a real time race, but I changed my mind at the last second after changing the stops.

Users on the Speedrun subreddit have noted several inconsistencies in the performance of Mekarazium’s Blade Wolf. Compared to its Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance release in the base game, the DLC release features almost no keyboard sounds. There is also a moment captured by Redditor SevenStack where Mecarasium appears to remove his right hand from the mouse as the in-game camera continues to pan. Mecarasium tries to explain this by saying that he moved the mouse with his left hand.

Network N earns an affiliate commission on qualifying sales.

At the end of the race, the GDQ announcer tells Mekarazium their time, confirming that they have set a new world record. Mekarazium replies: “Can we, for example, not use world record material? It is very misleading. The fastest time is supposed to have been set here, when in reality someone else could have a faster version with a world record.”

The previous official record for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance’s Blade Wolf DLC of seven minutes and 20 seconds is currently held by Mekarazium.

“People might think [this] The BW DLC starts a legitimate qualifying run, which may cause problems later on,” continues Mekarazium’s message to the GDQ team. “I had not planned to put this race in qualifying and it was a way to show the full potential of the specific category, which is what people should aim for.

“I did something really bad and I shouldn’t have done it at the event… I acted selfishly and didn’t spend more time thinking about others. I regret what I actually did.”

The Mekarazium release has since been removed from the Games Done Quick YouTube channel.

SGDQ 2022 ended on July 3 with the launch of Elden Ring, successfully raising over $3 million for the Médecins Sans Frontières charity. We’ve reached out to GDQ for comment on the Mekarazium release and will update this story if they respond.
