As we saw in our new Resident Evil 4 preview, first of all, Leon and Ashley now talk while playing the game. She’s not just a silent robotic resource to manage; she feels like a true companion, gasping in fear as she reacts to Won and talks to Leon about what they should do next.
If you remember Ellie from The Last of Us and how she dynamically reacted to what Joel and the player did, the relationship between Leon and Ashley now seems to have been forged by the game and not just the cutscenes.
Second, Ashley now reacts more naturally in gunfights and battles. In the original Resident Evil 4, the phrase “wait” meant that she was standing there like a magic wand, waiting for your next command, even though she was surrounded by a swarm of cattle. Leon can now tell Ashley to either stay close to her or “give her some space”, which will cause her to run away from her for cover.
From what we’ve seen in the new gameplay footage provided by PCGamesN, Ashley is making a much more humane effort to avoid danger. Simply put, she behaves much more like a human being and feels like an authentic part of the entire Resident Evil 4 experience, rather than just a mechanical, non-stop escort quest that she occasionally speaks to during cutscenes.
