As Elden Ring’s anniversary approaches, talk of potential DLC for FromSoftware’s open-world game is hotter than ever. But what about all the other Soulslikes in development? They certainly quench a thirst for a larger genre, and a Lords of the Fallen developer has now noted that when Elden Ring first came out, they realized they accidentally had a lot of the same ideas as FromSoftware.
We’re talking about developer HexWorks, who is working on a sequel/reboot of The Lords of The Fallen, the bizarre sequel to the 2014 game Lords of The Fallen. HexWorks didn’t do anything wrong here, it just seems like a rather unfortunate side case of thinking that put the team on their toes when the Elden Ring was revealed.
“Our revolutionary weapon, the flail, appeared in the Elden Ring trailer and killed us from the inside out,” says Cesar Virtosu, Creative Director of Lords of The Fallen. “And we saw that one of our bosses was almost identical to Malenia,” he adds in what must have been a kick in the teeth.
While coincidences are certainly unfortunate, HexWorks seemed to take it in stride, despite Elden Ring having some hope for The Lords of The Fallen. “As you can imagine, there’s some pressure,” Edge told Virtos (via GamesRadar). “People were asking, ‘Guys, do you do horse fights? Do you have an open world?
While not the kind of pressure and expectation RPG developers need, in direct conflict with the success of a studio like FromSoftware and Elden Ring, Virtosu admits that HexWorks wouldn’t even make The Lords of the Fallen right now if It wasn’t for publicity.
“Miyazaki is our father and our grandfather. Without him, we wouldn’t have a job,” says Virtosu. Virtosu even recently apologized for Marvel’s Avengers, when he was running one of the game’s co-development studios.
