Intel Meteor Lake processors support ray tracing

Intel Meteor Lake processors will be the first Team Blue chips to leave the LGA 1700 socket, following current 12th generation Core processors and upcoming 13th generation processors. However, in addition to releasing a different number of motherboard pins, it appears that the company plans to support ray tracing on the iGPUs of its 14th generation components.

Coelacanth’s Dream (via Tom’s Hardware) spotted signs of ray tracing functionality in Intel Meteor Lake processors when they reviewed code patches for the Intel Graphics Compiler (IGC). However, it will take some time to find out how well the Xe-HPG architecture handles demanding graphics setups compared to the best graphics cards.

Adding ray tracing support bolsters the feature set of Intel Meteor Lake CPUs and proves that they will be the best gaming CPUs when they finally arrive, but the blue team is catching up late here. Current-gen AMD Ryzen 6000 processors and a dedicated APU inside the Steam Deck can already handle this with their RDNA 2-based graphics chips.

AMD Ryzen 7000 processors will also support ray tracing, which arguably gives Team Red a significant advantage over Team Blue when it comes to iGPU performance degradation with ray tracing enabled.
