The long-awaited KOTOR Star Wars remake has been postponed indefinitely, reports Jason Schreier of Bloomberg in a new report. The news came from several people close to the project, who spoke to Schreier anonymously, also saying that the delay was unexpected for most of the Aspyr team behind it, who believed that development of the space game was proceeding smoothly.
Aspyr management had a series of meetings throughout July before making the decision to “pause” development and decide the future direction of the new version of KOTOR, the sources told Loomberg. Aspyr also fired creative director Brad Prince and art director Jason Minor in early July, something Schreier’s sources said they didn’t expect.
The catalyst for this drastic change in direction was reportedly a demo the team pitched to Sony and Lucasfilm on June 30. Bloomberg reports that the developers who worked on the demo were happy with the game’s progress up to this point, but Aspyr thought otherwise. Schreyer said the conflicting views stemmed in part from the start of the project, when Aspyr management thought the game could be released in 2022, but the development team has now said it would be more realistic to release in 2025.
Beamdog, Aspyr’s recently acquired studio, is busy with its own projects in the meantime, at least for now.
Another source told Bloomberg that management may find the project unsustainable after the team spent more time and money building the demo than they expected.
Set in the era of the Great Republic, when the Jedi ruled centuries before the events of George Lucas’ film saga, KOTOR is often considered a milestone in the world-building of role-playing games. it’s playable on PC, though it understandably feels rather dated compared to what could be a modern reimagining of the series. For now though, it looks like that should distract us for a while.
