Little Nightmares III review – another trip into the twisted world of nightmares

This time is less scary, but with the possibility of cooperation.

Little Nightmares returns this time in the third episode. Again, the world welcomes you with a dark atmosphere and grotesque to terrible enemies that will certainly not let us, like children, sleep. However, the imaginary torch in the development of this game was taken from the Original Creators Studio Supermassive Games, and as a bonus game, for the first time in the series, it received the online collaboration feature that many fans were interested in. Although at first glance it is clear and obvious that we are in a world of little nightmares, after spending some time with the game, I was surprised that the creators could also capture Spirit and Fright.

It’s better in two

The story of the game this time observes two figures, low and lonely. At the beginning you choose who you want to play as. Of course, they are best friends and you don’t have to face the horrors of the world alone in the world. Just take your friend’s hand and you know you can do this together. Each of them also has their own equipment. Alone there is a witch, and the low one has his faithful bow. Both of these tools will need to be used to solve puzzles and find a ride or protection from enemies. For example, you will break a path in a wall or bow with a cut rope to throw a hanging box on it and reach higher. In this regard, it is noticeable that the creators really aim mainly in the form of collaboration, because in the vast majority it is necessary to collaborate and use both tools or both symbols. If you play the game on your own, of course, you won’t be deprived of the experience since the second character controls the artificial intelligence.

Alone there is a witch, and the low one has his faithful bow.

However, you cannot change your character during the game and only play as the one you choose at the beginning. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to use another tool, click it to trigger it and the event will arrive. Sometimes, however, it happened to me that the computer-controlled character would perform this action before I looked at the new room. At other times (and most of the time) she waited again to come to the next procedure. So I was a little confused by that, and I don’t know if that was the intention, but I would have believed it. So it would somewhat imitate a really real person where you just solve the puzzle and after the second one it’s your friend again. However, it got a little worse when this “computer friend” was later in the game when he didn’t follow me when he went to other places. So soon it was inevitable to return to him because he did not answer my call.

The world is nowhere

Visually the title has moved a step forward and the graphics look better. The world is very detailed and some of the scenery was very nice to see. You will visit 4 different and creative chapters in which you will travel through mysterious mirrors. But to find these mirrors, you will go through countless dangers. If you want to take the survey more thoroughly, you can collect the dolls in each chapter to complete their collection.

Of course, not all of them, but most of the places you pass through are quiet and you can only hear the sounds of creaking wood or the humming wind.

The game significantly contains its own very dark atmosphere, and the depiction of the enemies will somewhat disturb and fascinate you at the same time. However, the word “anxious” appears on the labeling of this game more than the word “scary”. Compared to the first episode, where the game immediately pulled me out and at every turn I was terrified of possibly meeting another disgusting figure and where this feeling was further illustrated by the sound of our character’s speeding heart. Unfortunately, Little Nightmares 3 did not awaken this feeling in me. I would especially add the lack of scary, albeit silent, background music. Of course, not all of them, but most of the places you pass through are quiet and you can only hear the sounds of creaking wood or the humming wind. Sure, there was music playing, especially in boss encounters, but nothing stood out in my memory too much.

Management is sometimes a pain

To survive this hostile world, you will have to sneak, sprint and jump in addition to solving the puzzle. You will especially enjoy sprinting and escaping from enemies here. Most enemy and boss encounters are resolved through a chase, where you’re forced to run as fast as your little legs will allow you to. However, the sickness of this mechanic was the need to react almost immediately or predict what would happen. Everything is calculated in almost seconds. To give you an idea: in one such scene you will find yourself in a new place. You don’t know where to go, the door will open in the morning and a nasty enemy will come out.

You will especially enjoy sprinting and escaping from enemies here.

However, if you hesitate for a second and start sprinting later than your computer friend (who obviously knew in advance what was going to happen) and you no longer have the opportunity to avoid the enemy. The same thing happens when you are doing texture work and the character will stop for a short time. So you have to repeat the scene, and since you now know what’s going on, you run right from the start so the enemy doesn’t catch up unless you’re stuck somewhere. And this is repeated several times during the game. So it feels like the game just wants you to fail and have to repeat certain parts.

A similar case is also under control and camera, which has not changed compared to previous games. Thanks to the camera angle, it is sometimes difficult to judge the distance or location from which you need to jump. Although the game seems to be a 2D platform, you can move almost arbitrarily across the room back and forth. All you have to do is stand on the edge of the abyss only on the step next to the game and not on the next platform or pieces you jump into the abyss. Or just jump a little early or late and fail again. So if I usually died in a game, it was because of these small things and not the fact that I wouldn’t know where to go or how to properly handle a situation. After repeating these scenes a few times, this again contributed to the fact that my fleeing enemies no longer come to me as scary as they are rather annoying.

The above facts didn’t really appeal to me while playing and I couldn’t mention them here. However, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a pretty good game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to try online co-op at the time of review, but I think it would be a great addition to this game that could improve the gameplay. The puzzle solving was fun and wasn’t frustrating or difficult, so in that regard you can expect a smooth and enjoyable passage through the game. However, it should be added that some of the puzzles were a bit repetitive, and you will find similar or completely puzzles from past games.

Solving the puzzles was fun and wasn’t frustrating or difficult.

Gradually, through the scenes of the film, you will begin to unravel the story and the fate of the characters. Again, the title lacks a beautiful but slightly sad story, easily understandable even without one word. I spent 6 hours playing, which I find for the price of 1000 is quite a lot. On the other hand, if you plan to play the game mostly cooperatively, you only need one copy and invite your friend to play thanks to the free “Prody Pass”, which is definitely positive news.

Verdict

Despite the changes from the original developers, Little Nightmares 3 retains its originality, imagination and a great dark world that you will not only enjoy but admire. While it looks more action-packed and less scary than the first installment, you won’t be deprived of several hours of entertainment. This time a calm friend. Whether you’re willing to be bitten by the diseases of controls and camera or sometimes very unlikely Chass, the title will once again offer you a fascinating experience of a famous, twisted world full of small and large nightmares.
