But Sony has finally agreed with AMD again.
Reuters reported a very interesting piece of information today. While the gaming world is busy with the recently announced PlayStation 5 Pro console, Sony is already focusing on the future in the form of the PS6. And while we expected next-gen devices like the PS4 and PS5 to feature an AMD chip, things were not so clear-cut.
At least, this is what Reuters reports, citing three sources. The final decision on the chip manufacturer was supposed to be made in 2022, but in addition to AMD, Intel was also supposed to make it to the imaginary final. In addition to design, the latter could also engage in production, since, unlike AMD, it has its own chip factories.
The talks were expected to last several months, but the parties reportedly failed to agree on a price. Sony eventually settled again with AMD, which would design the chip and TSMC would take care of manufacturing.
Shortly after, an Intel representative commented on the news, stating: “We strongly disagree with this description (of the situation), but will not comment on any current or potential conversations with customers (of our products).” AMD declined to comment on the situation, Sony has not yet commented.
The news comes about a month after Intel laid off more than 15,000 employees and is undergoing a major restructuring. For now, it’s betting heavily on its fabs and specifically on the Intel 18A process, which it’s investing heavily in. On the product side, the company is expected to launch new Arrow Lake desktop processors in October, and we won’t have to wait long for Battlemage graphics cards.
