The company wants to focus on creating new IP addresses.
Sony is a giant that generates a decent income by creating games aimed primarily at the PlayStation console. However, according to an interview with Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki in the Financial Times, its management seems to be acutely concerned about the lack of its own, as yet unseen intellectual property, which is necessary for expansion. Because of this, it has decided to invest several billion dollars in starting to create new and especially original brands that will eventually become part of its portfolio. The company’s management knows that if it does not take this step, someone else may overtake it in creating gaming hits.
However, Totoki notes that Sony’s current brands are doing a very good job of attracting new players. However, he says they are not strong enough to properly expand the player ecosystem, so new brands need to be created. However, it is questionable whether this is the right path. At least Concord shows that betting on news is not always ideal. For example, the likes of Bloodborne or some well-known adventure games would undoubtedly be received much better. So hopefully, Sony’s next steps will go in the direction that the majority of the community wants.
