In the end, the efficiency is not very good either.
The second batch of Zen 5-based Ryzen 9000 processors will be released on Thursday, and today we received reviews of both the top models, the 16-core Ryzen 9950X and the 12-core 9900X. Unfortunately, as was the case with the younger models that came out last week, they are not entirely positive.
In work applications, the processors are not so bad yet. Depending on the specific task, they can offer higher percentage units or even more than 10% more performance than the previous generation. However, in the worst cases, these are lower percentage units or even a slight regression.
Our readers will probably be primarily interested in gaming performance, and here the results of the younger models only confirm. According to Hardware Unboxed, the Ryzen 9950X provides less than a percent more FPS in games on average out of 13 games. Some regressions also contributed to this number, by a few percent, for example in The Last of Us Part 1, Horizon Forbidden West or Starfield. For example, Techpowerup also reports an average shift of 1%.
The big focus of last week’s reviews was efficiency. It quickly became clear that this was simply a tactical move by AMD, which labeled the Ryzen 9700 and 9600 as X’s despite their 65W TDP. Comparing the Ryzen 9700X to the 7700, which has the same TDP, efficiency is only slightly better. This was confirmed by the extensive Gamers Nexus test, which also recorded some regression in this area.
The same goes for the new Ryzen 9900X and 9950X. If we focus solely on games, then according to the Hardware Unboxed results, the efficiency of the 9950X is even worse than that of the 7950X, which is already quite an alarming signal for AMD. Zen 5 brought significant changes in terms of the overall architecture and was a big success in the notebook segment, but the desktop versions were not very successful.
Both processors will hit the market tomorrow. The Ryzen 9900X starts at $499, while the 9950X starts at $649. We don’t know the Czech prices yet. However, if you’re looking for a new processor with high multi-core performance, the older 7900X or 7950X are more profitable. For gamers, the Ryzen 7800X3D is still the obvious choice.
