With the release of the new part of the Assassin’s Creed series, subtitled “Shadows”, she woke up. a lot of attention to Yasuke’s figurewhich Ubisoft calls a real historical samurai in its materials. And it is this characterization that some players do not like. In recent days, a Japanese petition calling for the cancellation of the game has attracted interest. Its author, Shimiku Toru, managed to collect more than 48 thousand signatures on the Change.org portal, so this is definitely not an initiative of a few players.
At the same time, Toru explains the reasons that prompted him to file the petition. He mentions, for example, distortion of facts about samuraiwhen Ubisoft should ignore its function as servants of the nobility. Tohru refers to the figure of William Adams, who was the first European to receive the title of samurai. According to Tori, the game’s depiction of Jasuke is a clear misunderstanding of the nature and role of the samurai, which as a result is offensive to Japanese culture and history, and may even be linked to racism against Asians.
The petition’s author calls on players to show Ubisoft in this direction that historical priority and respect for culture really do matter. The criticism is therefore not aimed at the mere presence of Jasuke, but rather at the overall portrayal of samurai and Ubisoft’s claims of fidelity to history and the first black samurai. Shadows of Assassin’s Creed will be released on November 12 on PC (Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect) and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
