Nintendo stopped walking through hot messes. Presenting the financial results, President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that they are going to introduce Nintendo Switch successor. But that won’t happen at the Nintendo Direct in June. The new console/handheld device will be unveiled this fiscal year, which is by the end of March 2025.
New Nintendo Direct it will focus on games that will be released in the second half of 2024. We expect the announcement of Switch 2 (that’s what the console will probably be called) after the summer holidays. According to assumptions, it should be released in early 2025 and will be a development of the current Switch.
According to recently leaked information, Switch 2 is due to release new Joy-Cons. But they are supposed to connect to the console/handheld device using a magnet, whereas current models use a rail system. For this reason, older Joy-Cons likely won’t be compatible with the Switch 2, and new ones won’t be compatible with the old Switch. Conversely, the Switch Pro controller should continue to work.
Nintendo doesn’t need to rush into making an announcement. The Switch sold 15.7 million last fiscal year, bringing the console total to 141.32 million. Sales are expected to fall 14% to 13.5 million in the current fiscal year.
