The Nintendo Switch’s life cycle is slowly coming to an end, and big new games for the platform have given way to mostly remakes of old ones. The upcoming Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is one of them. A game from Intelligent Systems that was originally released 20 years ago on the GameCube console and received very high ratings. Switch players will get a modernized look this year.

That’s exactly what Nintendo is now enticing with a multi-minute demo that introduces the main elements of this RPG, which takes place in an entirely paper world, which, of course, has a lot of mechanics associated with it. Gradually, you meet interesting characters and complete your party while you search for the legendary treasure hidden behind the main door.

An interesting fact is that the battles are turn-based, but with active elements in the form of quick events that can increase the value of your attack or, conversely, allow you to block enemy attacks. Compared to the original game, you can expect better graphics with higher detail and resolution, as well as an upgraded soundtrack, although there is an option to include the original one.

I already started the remake and after several hours of playing I had very positive impressions, the second Paper Mario looks like a lot of fun even 20 years after the original release. Mechanically, it hasn’t aged that badly and definitely has something to offer even today’s gamers, including a very good audio-visual component. But of course it’s too early for a longer assessment, and he’ll bring you a full review as soon as the embargo allows.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will release on May 23rd on Nintendo Switch. You can buy the game on Alza.cz.
