Kingdom Come: Deliverance for Nintendo Switch reviewed by Digital Foundry

The Czech historical role-playing game Kingdom Come: Deliverance from the Warhose studio was released six long years ago on PC and the latest generation consoles. And while many gamers are already looking forward to a potential sequel, today is the day KCD takes a look at a new platform: the Nintendo Switch. Thomas Morgan from Digital Foundry managed to try out the port from Saber Interactive, which also took care of the conversions of the third Witcher and the Crysis series in advance, and brought a fairly detailed analysis.

Of course, significant concessions had to be made. The game is rendered in dynamic resolution from 540p to 720p and then upscaled to Full HD (if you play in docked mode). Compared to the Xbox One version, which Morgan compared the new port to, KCD for Switch has, in addition to a lower resolution, less detailed textures, shorter draw distance and worse shadows. At some points (mostly outdoors, in dense vegetation), the image may also appear slightly out of focus.

On the contrary, the positive news is the preservation of some technologies. In the game you’ll encounter reflections via SSR or CryEngine’s real-time lighting called SVOGI, albeit to a limited extent. The good news, for example, is that the game launches a minute shorter (compared to XONE), although you still have to wait almost a minute and a half.

The frame rate is certainly not ideal. In quieter passages the game can hold 30 FPS, but unfortunately it has an inconsistent frame rate, so even in these moments it won’t be completely smooth. In villages, in-game cutscenes, or during battles, the frame rate drops significantly. Usually it stays at 25 FPS, in worst cases it can sometimes drop to somewhere around 15 FPS. Only pre-rendered cutscenes with a frame rate of 30 frames per second and the correct frame spacing work absolutely stably.

Overall, this is a port with significant compromises. It may not give you a full experience, but you couldn’t even expect that from this conversion. As a result, the game looks quite decent on such old hardware. In addition, it is possible to enjoy the game on the go in portable mode, with Czech voice acting available compared to other consoles. You can buy the game on Alza.cz.
