The blame lies with the relatively large number of layoffs at Amazon, which in total approximately 14,000 employees will be affected. At the same time, even the gaming division, led by the team responsible for the aforementioned New World, did not escape cuts.
However, current events indicate that this situation could significantly affect other gaming projects from Amazon. In recent hours, the focus has been on upcoming MMO from the Lord of the Rings universethe development of which was announced in 2023. The game was supposed to be a collaboration between Amazon, its in-house studio Amazon Games Orange County, and Embracer Group.
However, at the moment it seems that ambitious plans will remain on paper and, at most, in the heads of developers. This indicates that Message from developer Ashley Amrinwho worked as a senior gameplay engineer on a Lord of the Rings MMO game. But this week she posted on her LinkedIn profile that she had lost her job along with other colleagues who worked on the game. The team that was still working on New World suffered the same fate.
So the future of MMOs based on the Lord of the Rings brand is already here. very uncertain at best and it would not be entirely surprising if its complete cancellation were confirmed in time.
