Starfield hasn’t been available for a few days now, at least for premium edition owners, so we have official confirmation that, according to speculations, it really only came with support for FSR 2, and not Nvidia’s competing DLSS or Intel’s XeSS. . The AMD partnership was a big topic before release, as we covered the entire sponsored game situation in a separate review. Whether we will ever see another scaling technology officially implemented remains to be seen. However, PureDark, which has already taken care of the modification for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, for example, released a mod shortly after the release that allows you to replace FSR 2 with DLSS or XeSS technology.
But the matter did not end there either, because John Linneman from Digital Foundry came up with Twitter with an amazing expression. In a discussion about the DLSS mod for Starfield, he revealed that he knows three developers who had to remove already implemented DLSS from their games due to sponsorship. Although he subsequently deleted the tweet, later he clarifiedthat he did so only because of her misinterpretation by some people. He wasn’t talking about Starfield, but about other titles he can’t name.
The potential blocking of competing technologies by AMD has been discussed for a long time, since Starfield is far from the first game to contain only DLSS. Only this year it was, for example, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Dead Island 2 or the already mentioned Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. But AMD itself remained silent about the whole situation and did not answer questions from journalists. It wasn’t until late August that AMD’s head of gaming, Frank Azor, spoke to The Verge magazine. “If they want to use DLSS, they will have full support from AMD,” he said, referring to Bethesda, the developers behind Starfield. But then he continues in general: “When we make bundles, we always ask: “Are you ready to prioritize FSR?” But he says that he does not interfere with other technologies in any way. “When asked about DLSS support, we always say yes,” adds Azor.
So the situation is quite confusing and both statements contradict each other, because according to Linneman, some developers had to explicitly remove DLSS because of AMD, although it was already implemented in the game. Of course, without additional evidence it is difficult to judge on whose side the truth is.
This tweet is not about Starfield. I deleted it because it annoyed me that people misread it. We talked about this at DF Direct A WEEK ago. This is 100% not about Starfield. I have zero idea about this game. pic.twitter.com/GjqXOQuftH
