Commentary: Quantum Break is not officially part of the RCU, but that doesn’t mean anything.

A few days ago, EW magazine published an interview with Remedy Creative Director Sam Lake discussing in detail the new trailer for Alan Wake 2. Of course, Mr. Door is a newly announced character played by actor David Harewood. “Mr. Door” has already been mentioned in Control, but the connections go even further as the character strongly resembles Martin Hatch from Quantum Break. Both in character and characteristics, and in name (Door, Luke). Lake was also asked by EW magazine about this, and his answer baffled some players:

“A simple and straightforward answer: our previous games Max Payne and Quantum Break are not part of the Remedy Connected universe. They are not part of the Remedy plans. However, on a purely speculative level, in a sense of an easter egg, I like the idea of letting the audience come up with theories. I don’t want to throw them off the table. We allow questions to be created and give ideas to people who turn them into their own theories. I think that’s part of the fun.”

The official members of RCU are Alan Wake and Control (for now), and if you know anything about him, you probably weren’t surprised by Lake’s response. He could not even say anything more, because Max Payne is in the hands of Rockstar, and the rights to Quantum Break still belong to Microsoft. However, that doesn’t change the fact that Remedy is trying to get these games into RCU, albeit with some tweaks.

To do this, developers use a kind of “echoes” of individual characters. These are different people, but they have almost all the characteristics in common, and often their appearance. A typical example is Alex Casey, the protagonist of Alan’s books, who is an echo of Max Payne. Not only does he share his characteristics, but in AW2 he is also portrayed by Sam Lake, who had already lent his face to Max Payne in the first part of that series. So May Payne isn’t a direct part of RCU, but the connections are definitely there, and Remedy is taking ideas from the series and incorporating them into the universe.

The same can be said for Mr. Dor, who really looks a lot like Martin Hatch. After all, it is quite possible that the same actor would have played him, but Lance Reddick, unfortunately, died in March of this year.

A third example is the recently confirmed Tim Breaker. Judging by the last name, he is more related to Bright Falls Sheriff Sarah Breaker and her father Frank, a former FBC agent, but Sean Ashmore, who played the protagonist of Quantum Break, Jack Joyce, gave him the appearance. At the same time, fans point out that this is one of Remedy’s other puns, and his name could mean “time destroyer”.

Of course, these are not all connections with Quantum Break, I will talk about them in more detail in the next editions of RCU. In any case, the bottom line is that while Remedy doesn’t state it (even because of the licenses), it makes pretty obvious connections between RCU and games like Max Payne or Quantum Break. If Remedy does not return the message to the brands, we will never see an official inclusion in the universe, however, the connection works without problems even at a semi-official level.
