Sony was not particularly worried about the loss of Call of Duty

One of the first findings of the current U.S. federal court hearing on Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard was that Jim Ryan, head of PlayStation, never worried that Sony could lose the Call of Duty series. Microsoft has declassified email messages that refute any further interpretation of Sony’s deal.

“This is not about trying to get exclusivity,” written by Ryan in 2022 to former Sony boss Chris Dearing, “they have big interests and they have enough money to do this kind of thing. I spent a lot of time with Phil over the last day. [Spencerem]so with bobby [Kotickem] and I’m absolutely confident that we’ll be seeing Call of Duty on PlayStation for many more years to come.”

“We have some good things ahead of us,” Ryan continues, “I’m not happy and would prefer it not to happen, but we will be fine, everything will be more than fine.” in contrast to Sony’s later claim that Microsoft purchased Call of Duty exclusivity primarily for the Game Pass service.

Microsoft offered Sony first Call of Duty for another three years after the current license expires in 2024. Sony did not take up the offer, but Microsoft later repeatedly committed to publishing the series on the PlayStation for another ten years. Yesterday Xbox boss Phil Spencer vows in federal court that Call of Duty will be coming to PS5.
