Rockstar Games Studio is defending itself against allegations following the recent dismissal of more than thirty employees from its UK and Canadian subsidiaries. In an official statement, the company explained the reasons for the layoffs. She denies the layoffs are related to unions.
“Last week, we took action against a small number of individuals who were confirmed to be sharing and discussing proprietary data in a public forum. This is a direct violation of company policy.” A Rockstar representative told Bloomberg about this. “This is not an attack on unions or workers’ right to organize.”
According to the IWGB (Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain), Rockstar employees have begun organize on a private Discord serverwhere an initiative aimed at creating trade unions was allegedly created. Union representatives described the company’s actions as “the most callous attempt to suppress trade union activity in the history of the British gaming industry.”
According to the unions, in addition to Rockstar employees, only their representatives had access to the mentioned Discord. However, if the studio does prove that internal materials were distributed through the server – perhaps even those related to the development of GTA 6 – its reaction can be partially understandable.
Rockstar has dealt with several embarrassing leaks in recent years and is doing everything it can to ensure similar incidents don’t happen again. Let us recall that Grand Theft Auto VI became the subject of one of the largest leaks. Footage from an early version of development ended up on the Internet, which, for obvious reasons, influenced further work, and also had an impact on Take-Two Interactive.
