Review of the board game “Community of Adventurers”

Adventure trips can look different. In classic games, heroes are usually on their own. Their story could have been told by Lara Croft or the hero of the Uncharted series, the brave Nathan Drake. In the board game “Community of Adventurers” one hero is not enough. Here you will work directly with whole “expeditions”. You can read how difficult it is to create the correct set in the following lines.

  • Number of players: 2-6
  • Game time: 45 – 60 min.
  • Price: 1179 CZK (Thlam Games)
  • Credit: Asmodee Blackfire
  • Age: 12+

Gameplay of Community of Adventurers is based on joining

At the very beginning of the Adventurer’s Society, you set up a map of locations where you can “go”. Since this is primarily a card game, don’t expect much travel. Then you shuffle all the cards representing the six types of characters into one deck, after which it’s time to choose a suit. The round begins by dealing one card to each player until all participants have 5 or 7 cards depending on the number of players. The first player in order can then draw a card or play an expedition. Lizak himself is associated in the Adventurer’s Community with the fact that he can be taken from an available offer, or a package that rewards you with an additional card for more or less not knowing what you are getting into.

The total number of cards you can hold in your hand is limited in the Adventurer’s Community. You cannot have more than 10 cards available. Once you have this tome, you have no choice but to “play” expeditions on your turn. It’s practically emptying the cards from your hand. However, this has well-defined rules that you determine when you deal the very first card. With this, you can choose the color or activity type that the card presents as a priority. For example, when you choose a color as your primary color, you can stack cards representing different professions on top of each other, so you can meet mercenaries, sponsors, photographers, or even doctors in one place. However, they must match the fact that they are one color. If one of them is different, it cannot be assigned to that assembly.

However, the same thing happens when you choose a profession as the main factor. If you bet on Cartographers, for example, you automatically have to bet other Cartographers on top of you, and other characters are almost unacceptable. Speaking of specializations, each brings a special ability to the game. You can join almost any party with a mercenary, but he can’t be an expedition leader, so the moment you have 10 cards in your hand, you lose because you have no other choice but to return the cards to the supply. . What’s also interesting about them is that they don’t count towards the scoring. Therefore, they are a rather difficult factor, which, however, can help you a little when moving.

The golden monkeys symbolize the end of your journey in the Brotherhood of Adventurers.

Personally, I liked the cartographer in the Adventurer’s Society. This gave me the opportunity to play another expedition card from my hand as I advanced on the board, which was handy. However, this character ability could only be used after you had drawn all the expedition cards that you could put on the table. In addition to card abilities, you also choose the color of your commander. On sites of the same color, you are given the opportunity to move forward. But you have to have a big enough expedition, because small groups will never make it. When it’s big enough, nothing stops you from moving. The collection continues to expand until three golden monkeys are found. As soon as this happens, unplayed cards are returned, the abilities of the characters are evaluated, and points are awarded for the created locations and expeditions.

This is followed by another round or the complete end of the game and the associated recalculation of points, after which, of course, the winner is the one who scored the most points. A deadlock situation may occur. When this happens, a detailed review of the expeditions follows, after which the one with the largest party of adventurers wins.

If the variation presented so far seemed too easy for you, then in the Adventurer’s Community there is still an opportunity to complicate the game with an alternative for advanced players, who can either be offered a completely random offer, or there is an opportunity to beautifully choose one after another until six are chosen. character cards. The difficulty goes up a lot in this variant because you always need to include certain heroes in the party as part of the progression.

The adventurer community won’t offer you big adventures

The basic idea of the Adventurer’s Society is very worthy. You can start playing the basic version very quickly, but for those who want to go harder, the more advanced version is offered. Maps are visually interesting and easy to work with. Personally, I would have expected a slightly wider range of tactical options, but then the playing time would have to be slightly increased.

In my opinion, the fact that the Adventurer’s Society is profiled to a certain extent presents a rather fundamental problem. In it, players can look forward to expeditions, but this is not what most expect, but a “simple” combination of cards. If you don’t expect adventure from this installment, you’ll get a decent map title with fast-paced gameplay and a fair amount of fun. Although I honestly expected a little more. Therefore, be careful with your purchase.
