The first two installments of the Fallout series still belong to a group of classics among RPG fans that they can’t touch. One of the characters that largely determines the appearance of the first and, no doubt, the second representative of this brand, Tim Kane spoke on his Youtube channel about why he, in fact, left the development of Fallout 2. As often happens, there were, of course, other reasons . The success of the first part was known, but this meant more pressure on Cain. It probably wouldn’t have mattered in the end if management hadn’t given the cover art for Fallout 2 to a third party company without his knowledge, thus damaging Kane’s credibility with the project.
The risks and overall pressure were high, but the supposed final straw was to be a bonus giveaway, during which he received significantly less than he actually did, given his importance to development that he had initially. Of course, Kane didn’t understand why he wasn’t being properly rewarded, to which Brian Fargo had to tell him that the decline “encourage him to do better next time“, which could only truly inspire a few people. Cain subsequently retired along with several other prominent creators, which ultimately led to the full implementation of the original concept of Fallout 2.
Cain’s experience makes it clear that game development is not easy, and even with all the good steps you take, you may not be rewarded in the end. And then, of course, the working conditions themselves, which are slowly improving, but the path to full employee satisfaction has not yet been traveled, as some problematic factors are still present.
