The European Commission recently approved the sale of Activision Blizzard to Microsoft. Following this decision, a speech by the European Commissioner for Economic Competition was published. Margret Vestagerwho explained in it several reasons that ultimately contributed to the approval of the acquisition.
First, Vestager said that approx. four times as many PlayStation consoles than the competing Xbox. However, it is not clear from the statement for which period the sales data is taken. In terms of the games themselves, the European Commissioner indicated that the share of Microsoft and Activision above 20% only in certain segments and genres, which included shooters as well.
The European Commissioner adds that the higher share in this segment is primarily due to this popular Call of Duty series, whose possible exclusivity, however, according to the European Commission, Microsoft is more likely to shoot itself in the foot. Recall, we add that, unlike the EU, at the moment the acquisition is not approved by the UK Competition Authority, which will make the whole process at least a little more lengthy and complicated.
