“In the global market, AAA games for consoles have sold for $59.99 for many years, but last year games came out for $70.” Sega CEO Haruki Satomi and CFO Koichi Fukazawa are in the know.

They also report that they would like to reprice some titles they believe are in line with price increases while monitoring market conditions. Only one thing follows from this. Sega will make the more expensive/big games more expensive and the smaller ones will keep their original price.

Sega’s last big game was Sound boundaries, was released in November 2022 at US$60/€ across all platforms and sold over 3.2 million units by the end of March 2023. In the coming months, Sega will release Sonic Origins Plus, Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection, and Samba de Amigo: Party Central.

Take-Two was the first company to raise the prices of its games, in August 2020 it started selling NBA 2K21 for $70. Then Sony and Activision joined, then Electronic Arts and Square Enix. More recently Microsoft and Nintendo; Redfall and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Meanwhile, the first more expensive game is also planned by Ubisoft, it will be a pirate action Skull & Bones.
