RT: Overdrive mode for Cyberpunk 2077 was released last week. In addition to the classic ray tracing that was already available in the game, path tracing was added, i. a complete implementation of ray tracing, which is thus used for almost all direct and indirect lighting. In the context of video games, this is still a new and very demanding technology, so even the developers directly recommended playing with Path Tracing only on RTX 40 or RTX 3090 cards, but it soon became clear that with certain concessions, you can play on cheaper graphics. And the new video from Digital Foundry confirms this.
Richard Leadbetter tested several different models and found that in DLSS and 1080p performance mode you can play the game at 30fps even on an RTX 3050. However, this requires downloading a fan mod that changes the path tracing. Thus, the rays are not reflected twice, as in the classical version, but only once. This, of course, leads to worse quality, especially of various reflections, but also to significantly higher performance.
But if you don’t want to make that concession, for 1440p and 30 FPS (unmodified) in Balanced DLSS mode, you should be fine with the RTX 3070, which is just over 25% faster than AMD’s current flagship RX. 7900 XTX when using FSR 2 Balanced. Of course, the RTX 40 series cards have a big advantage, which allows you to generate images that will significantly increase the frame rate, i.e. smoothness, but at the expense of higher latency. If you’re resorting to 30fps, Leadbetter strongly recommends leaving the frame rate unlocked, as input lag is said to be so high with native V-Sync that it’s nearly impossible to play. You can’t run path tracing on the Intel Arc graphics yet, but it’s probably the driver’s fault.
Also, if you can’t try it on your hardware, don’t despair. There’s another option in the form of cloud gaming via GeForce Now on par with the RTX 4080. At 4K with Performance DLSS mode and frame generation, you get past the 60fps limit, and according to Leadbetter, input lag isn’t too bad. .
