Owners of older Windows operating systems have another reason to upgrade. Valve announced that will end support for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 on Steam. The reason is security and Google Chrome.

“The latest features on Steam are based on a built-in version of Google Chrome that no longer works on older versions of Windows.” explains Valve’s decision.

“In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows features and security updates that are only present on Windows 10 and above.”

You will not be able to run Steam on older Windows operating systems from 01/01/2024. If you’re running such a version of Windows, then you’re in a significant minority. According to Steam’s February Hardware and Software Survey, only 0.09% of users use Windows 7, while 1.43% use the 64-bit version. This is less than half a percent, even in the case of Windows 8.1.

Microsoft ended support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 back in January, and recently Epic Games also shut down Fortnite on older systems.
