Valiant Hearts: Coming Home – Review on INDIAN

Sometimes we come across video game canapés that give us a much greater rush of emotion in a short amount of time than significantly longer games.

And that’s how I felt about 2014’s Valiant Hearts: The Great War from the French studio. Ubisoft Montpellier. A studio that specializes in graphic design and has worked on things like Rayman 2. So it’s no surprise that Valiant Hearts blew a lot of visuals and won a lot of awards despite being a small game.

For me personally, this is one of the best games I’ve ever played. The title caught my attention with its handling, use of music and, above all, the presentation of the story from the First World War so skillfully that even through a cute cartoon game, you were forced to relate to the disgusting and hard time of the war. And I am very glad that the title, which could bring a smile to the lips and tears to the eyes at the same time, has a continuation.

Valiant Hearts: Homecoming – the second part of the logic adventure platform game, which takes place during the First World War. It enriches the story of familiar characters from the previous installment and adds new playable characters that will be connected to each other even if they are on opposite sides of the line. Processing is almost identical to the previous part, with the exception of one big BUT!

second part coming out only for mobile phones as an exclusive game for Netflix account holders. I struggled with this information at first, but the controls in the title are handled so well on mobile that I can’t play on a non-mobile platform. However, I would still consider this an annoying minus. Because Valiant Hearts is definitely the kind of game that should get into the hands of as many players as possible.

Fortunately have a Netflix account and the average phone can handle anywhere, and if you also belong to this group, then there is almost nothing stopping you from trying the gaming pearl, because it’s worth it.

After the announcement of the second part of Valiant Hearts, I wondered if the developers would make the sequel even more thought-provoking than the first part.

And as soon as I turned on the game, it was proven to me that there would be another topic to think about. The pain of the First World War, like the repeatedly stupid conflict of countries wishing to be in power, destroys families, friendships and lives, only one can revive him. Racism.

Both parts of Valiant Hearts are based on real events and will benefit history buffs. And since we are in the game between 1914-1918 and from the perspective of American soldiers, the impact of racial segregation is more than noticeable here. And here it is beautifully explained how it really was with those African American soldiers.

For a better understanding of the stories of the main characters we’ll be playing as, let’s first introduce them.

ANNA

Hi, I’m Anna and I work in a hospital. As a woman, they won’t put a gun in my hand, and it doesn’t matter, because I can do the opposite of what these poor fellows do at the front. Instead of taking lives, I save them. Not only my knowledge helps to save lives and moral support, but also modern technologies that see through fabrics. This is a magical light. Like a light in my life – Freddie, an American soldier who kept me from going crazy. After I save everyone, I want to live happily ever after with Freddie.

ERNST

I’m Ernst, I did what I loved. I dived and collected fragments of valuable things from the depths of the sea, which I then sold. It was a quiet life. Without people, without worries, I drowned in what I love most. Until a skirmish between troops swept past my ship. A German battleship was sunk not far from my ship. I saved whoever I could. But that was the end of my peaceful life. I was recruited to fight for my country. A homeland that never brought me anything, and I wanted to be as far away from it as possible. A homeland that makes me rebel against one of the few friends that made me forget for a moment how annoying it is to be among people.

GEORGE

British pilot George arrives on duty. It’s a beauty flying free like a bird avoiding enemies that aren’t nearly as good as me. Well, except for the one who shot down my plane. Doesn’t matter. I will correct others and perhaps find a deeper meaning in this whole charade.

JAMES

I enjoy serving my country more than my clarinet and jazz! I get recognized just like my brother Freddie! Even though he’s African American, I’ve heard that he even commands a unit due to his merit! America finally recognizes people like us. People who also want to protect their homeland. I will be joining the 24th Infantry as my name is James!

Then racism came in big waves, especially in America. But war is war, and to win, some didn’t care who they sacrificed. For example, the US Navy used special tickets with a tear-off corner, which indicated that the application was submitted by a person with dark skin, and immediately rejected the application.

However, there were divisions made up mostly of minorities. For example, the 25th and 24th Infantry Divisionsin which James plays.

Unfortunately, the soldiers had a hard time, they were often treated inadequately and were not given proper training equipment, for example.

Times were bad and Valiant Hearts knows how to portray that time for us.

We will play each episode once for each of the previously named characters. There are three episodes in total and, just like in the first part, they have tasks in the form simple point-and-click solution – Take the item and take it somewhere. As a bonus, there are missions related to mini-games. One of my favorites was the one where I had to dodge German air raids with George and his plane to the beat of the music.

All movements in the game are perfectly processed for gestures on the mobile phone screen. But I still hope that the game will appear on another platform.

Both parts of Valiant Hearts can be described as educational. In each mission, you can collect from three to five objects, which are usually found in visible or hidden places. Each of the items explains their historical use in World War I, and you’ll learn how pilots threw metal ten-centimeter darts that killed soldiers even through their helmets. You will also learn about the early use of X-rays in World War I.

The whole game will be accompanied by old music, and you will also hear familiar songs. It’s amazing what a great musical accompaniment the developers dedicated to such a short game. And the rule “music makes the game” here it is doubly applicable, musical accompaniment always maintains the atmosphere and emotions.

Title is perfect fillers for prepaid game packages and I dare say that Netflix has bet on a very good game. When Valiant Hearts: Coming Home was announced, I was most interested in whether it will capture our hearts like the first part, and if it will arrive at the end with a twist that will make us aware of the tragedy and at the same time the irony of what is happening. Time and war itself. And the answer? ….

Verdict

Valiant Hearts: Coming Home is once again an exciting journey during the First World War. We’re looking at different sides of the front, with both new and old heroes. We will only be playing the sequel on mobile phones, which is a bit of a shame. But on the other hand, the title is a perfect example of games that should be showing up more often in prepaid gaming packages.
