The beginning of the 15th century seemed to enchant Czech developers. The latest addition is Songs from Kalich, a real-time strategy game set during the Hussite Wars that he’s preparing. sole developer – Jan Vodichka. You can also try single player thanks to the demo he posted on Steam.
In terms of gameplay, it should be a bit like Warcraft 3 or another StarCraft. “I love Blizzard’s real-time strategy,” Vodicka explains to Zing.cz. “I already directed two of these little plays when I was in college, so I have experience with that genre.”
Songs of the Chalice take place in 1419 and 1420. General Jan Zizka leaves Prague with his retinue and heads for Pilsen. He participates in the expulsion of part of the Catholic population and participates in various skirmishes and fights. Players can already try one of them: in the demo, they take on the role of Zizka and try to lead her through the forest and fight enemies.
The title promises a variety of missions that will vary in terms of gameplay and tactics the player will have to use. We should also come across various Easter eggs and related bonus tasks.

Fantasy elements, such as the recent game Bohemian Hussite Wars 1428: Shadows over Silesia, but don’t wait. “I don’t want to do fantasy, but I also don’t want to do historically accurate work like Kingdom Come: Deliverance,” adds Vodicka, who has been working on the game for a year now. According to him, in case of pressure on authenticity, the gameplay will suffer, which he immediately points out on Steam itself. “Zizka’s mace, for example, is three times bigger than it actually is, everything is spatially resolved differently, the battles I want to have in the game don’t necessarily show exactly how it happened… I’m twisting the story a bit to make the game is more fun,” he says.
It’s also interesting that he doesn’t use engines like Unreal or Unity. He creates more or less everything by himself. No release date yet, a brief taster can be found in the tweet below.
