Another big game means another technical glitch from Digital Foundry. This time we will talk about the horror The Callisto Protocol and its versions for the current generation consoles.
The game runs on Unreal Engine 4 and console tester Jon Linneman says it’s one of the most beautiful games on that engine. Especially when it comes to character models that look almost photorealistic. Probably the best example is the sweat running down the cheeks of the protagonist Jacob. However, Linnemann also praises the details of the environment and lighting. In short, the developers have done an excellent job in terms of visuals.
On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the game offers two modes: Performance and Quality, both of which have dynamic resolutions and are typically somewhere between 1440p and 1728p. However, in performance mode, the target is set at 60 fps, which is what the game holds most of the time. You can avoid occasional dips and minor stutters, but there are far fewer of them than the original PC version.
The quality mode is a bit odd as it is not the same on both consoles. It should include ray tracing which takes the experience to the next level here, but for some reason the XSX version only uses it for shadows and not reflections. Also, the game is quite unstable and occasionally drops well below 25 FPS while the goal is of course 30 FPS. The PS5 version is significantly more stable and offers full ray tracing.
The weaker Xbox Series S offers no choice at all, and you can’t expect ray tracing. The title here again targets 30fps at dynamic resolution, but the lowest values here can hit 1080p. According to Lineman, frame rates are solid and there are no issues with the Series X.
On a positive note, you can expect short loading times across all devices. The saved position will be loaded in about 6 seconds.
I also want to emphasize that this is one of the best ray tracing implementations on the console today. It’s rare to see multiple RT features in use at the same time, let alone such diffuse reflections. The game looks good either way, but RT adds a ton in my opinion.
