We’re almost halfway there. “A lot of people are interested,” Romero says of his game

In the summer, he lost funding from Microsoft.

John Romero provided Gamereactor with an update on the status of the game he and his team are developing Romero Games. Development was halted and the studio had to resort to layoffs when Microsoft lost funding in July, but the project was not canceled entirely. The famous developer is optimistic. He has not yet found a solution, but, according to him, there are more than enough companies that could take the place of the publisher.

“We own the intellectual property, we own the code, we own everything about the game. There are many companies interested in this that continue to work with us. When you develop a game for several years and invest, say, $50 million in it, and then decide to work with someone else, that someone gets $50 million for free,” Romero explains.

“And even if it doesn’t work out, we have $50 million worth of assets that we can use to build something else. So no matter what happens, we’re going to shorten the path to release,” he adds, revealing that the game, which is supposed to be a AAA first-person shooter, is about halfway done.

Romero Games lost support from Microsoft in early July as a result of massive cutbacks at the American publisher. In addition, at the time, Microsoft closed The Initiative studio and canceled the unfinished work Perfect Dark, froze Forza Motorsport and reduced Turn10 to the support team for the sister series Forza Horizon, also fired at Rare, where they are not continuing development of Everwild. Last but not least, the planned MMORPG from ZeniMax Online will not happen.
