Warhammer 40k Darktide Review In Progress – Struck By Chaos

Our full Warhammer 40k Darktide review will have to wait until we have more time with the latest release (or until Omnissiah wants it), but I’ve seen a lot of shooters in the last two weeks leading up to release. beta. I removed demonic growths from foundries, hijacked shipments of ammunition, and promptly executed archers in abandoned subway stations. However, developer Fatshark has been adamant that we don’t use this build as the basis for rated reviews, so to be clear, my impressions so far are based on an unfinished Darktide beta.

Normally this disclaimer might be a red flag, but at first glance Fatshark is doing exactly what it says and is using the pre-beta to test its multi-tenant infrastructure, identify bugs, and roll out more gradually. . content for your latest cooperative game. In this sense, it is important to say right away that I had a difficult race from a technical point of view.

Darktide system requirements are too high, but my PC has Ryzen 9 3900x and RTX 3080 Ti to have to that’s more than enough to handle any modern game. Unfortunately, this is often not the case: in the two weeks I spent with Darktide, most of my runs were accompanied by constant crashes, often resulting in lost progress.

However, there is hope in the darkness below Tertium. Fatshark implemented several fixes and opened an experimental branch, which combined with the collective troubleshooting power of thousands of early access players sharing setups on the forums, resulted in a much more stable experience when the beta ended yesterday.

It was a huge relief because when everything works right, Darktide is great. While you’ll have a pretty good idea of what to expect if you’ve played Vermintide or Vermintide 2, Darktide’s transition to a grim Warhammer 40k setting comes with enough significant changes to more than justify the trip.

You play as one of many “outcasts”: convicts taken aboard the Imperial Inquisitor’s ship, the Morningstar, for Dirty Dozen-style missions in the hive city of Tertium, which shows obvious signs of Chaos infestation. There are no preset characters like Vermintide’s Ubersreik Five, and instead you choose a class, customize your appearance and voice, and choose a name. Then head over to Morningstar, where you’ll select missions, buy gear, and possibly complete additional contracts for special rewards.

Warhammer 40k Darktide Preview: The psychic is in the Morningstar mission area, a large, round, open room with gothic machinery and pipes hanging from the vaulted walls, the nearby sun shining through the skylights.

Missions come in seven flavors, from handyman work to outright assassinations. However, they all involve fighting through the maze of the hive, traversing service tunnels, dank sewers, and old earthworks covered long ago with new layers of the city.

They are invariably filled with violent and loquacious bands of Chaos-stricken enemies. In another Vermintide outing, your team of four outlaws can be made up of any combination of character classes, and they can all hold their own in swarm melee that could break out at any moment. Periodically, you’ll also come across more powerful mini-boss enemies, such as Plague Ogryn and Beasts of Nurgle, and taking them down will always require teamwork.

Although the team composition is much looser this time, Darktide has not stopped emphasizing the team.To work. If you run ahead, or worse yet, fall behind, you risk being ambushed by special enemies like hunters or plague dogs, and there will be no one around to save you. Darktide also adds a new incentive to stick together: by sticking with your teammates, you increase a buff called cohesion, which increases your healing and defense.

All four classes play very differently (see our Darktide Class Guide for more), but only after you spend enough time leveling them up. As starters, they are mostly noted for their special abilities, but as you gain confidence, you become eligible to purchase new specialized equipment and the ability to modify your build with unique benefits. It wasn’t until I got to level 8 with my psychic medium that I had access to my first staff, which fills a ranged weapon slot and allows me to create powerful blasts of warping energy. . It’s nice to feel the class starting to open up and develop their unique abilities, but getting to that point with each of the four of them can be pretty exhausting.

I enjoyed every new weapon I picked up along the way, from the humble toilet shovel to the incredibly nice boltgun. The forces of Chaos still mourn the day my Ogryn Skullsplitter seized their first grenade launcher: I will hear the cry of the approaching horde, rally, and fire several high-explosive rounds into the center, turning the thieves and scum to the ground. in showers of poisonous ichor. and the larvae. It is something that never goes out of style.

I’ll have more information on Darktide after spending some time with the new stabilized version. In the meantime, check out the technical issues players were having during the beta before you dive into them. I hope Fatshark was able to solve most of them because it’s one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had in 40k. The universe today, when it works.
