Pico 4’s rival Oculus Quest 2, spotted by UploadVR, is now on sale by Chinese retailer Taobao. Unfortunately, the page lists a replacement price of 9,999 yen (about $1,500) and not the final MSRP. However, promotional material suggests a reveal on September 27, which means some sort of reveal may not be too far away.
Bytedance, the same company that owns TikTok, hasn’t officially announced its plans for Peak 4, so apply the usual pinch of salt to this pre-order news. However, that doesn’t mean the listing isn’t legit, as the seller’s information is consistent with recent rumors about Oculus Quest 2 competitors.

Pico 4 could steal some of the limelight from Quest 2 if the makers of ByteDance play their cards right, but there’s a chance it could also trade blows with Quest Pro. Eye and face tracking could give VR headsets the edge it needs to going up against high-end Meta glasses, not to mention costing potentially much cheaper than its Metaverse-focused opponent.
The Quest 2 remains one of the best VR headset options on the market, with its player base made up of both gaming PC enthusiasts and offline VR fans alike. However, the company may be walking on thin ice at the moment, as its decision to raise prices could hurt sales of the current generation.
If VR gamers end up moving from the Quest 2 to competitors like the Pico 4 and Valve Index, future devices like the Quest Pro and the so-called Oculus Quest 3 may catch them up. Whether that will actually happen remains to be seen, but if you’re not against the Metaverse, you might want to consider the upcoming Peak 4.
