Ito joined Sony in 1986 and has been developing PlayStation consoles since 2000. He first worked on LCD monitors for the PS1 and then was put in charge of the development of peripherals for the PS2. He subsequently led the development of the portable PSP. He designed the hardware for the PS3, and for the PS4 he was involved in software and hardware development.

In 2019, Ito spoke to Famitsu magazine about the design of the DualShock controllers, among other things, and explained why their shape didn’t fundamentally change: “We tried different things, but ended up going back to this shape. We thought this form was the easiest. (…) Of course, if a more user-friendly design comes naturally, that’s fine.”
