Skeleton and Ragdoll Models Finally Coming to Doom

From ray tracing to proper vampire support, the Doom development community continues to create some truly impressive additions to id Software’s iconic FPS game. Now it looks like the world of GZDoom is working on a proper skeletal model animation, which isn’t even in Quake, which can lead to good head tracking and even a ragdoll-style death animation. Yes, it’s all in 1993 Doom.

Doom has very simple animations, which is its beauty, but the GZDoom modding community is working on adding the Inter-Quake Model (IQM) format to give modders access to better character and enemy animations.

As noted by developer GZDoom Nash Muhandes, creators like Shiny Metagross and dpJudas finally made these IQM models work in Doom. The developers plan to add scripts for various bone manipulation features that modders can use, including head tracking, individual limb movement, and yes, even rag doll animation.

If all goes according to plan, the next wave of Doom mods could be built around modern character and enemy animation techniques. It’s potentially very interesting and we can’t wait to see how this Ninja Gaiden-style mod uses it.

Considering how amazing GZDoom’s creations are right now, it’s already hard to tell what’s done in Doom and what isn’t, so that doesn’t help.

Other Doom mod news has Pac-Man mixed with Portal and Resident Evil, and it’s as cool as it sounds.
