Sony And Tencent they have Acquired other shares of FromSoftware By Kadokawa, with a slight hegemony over the Chinese giant Japanese company, which together accounts for 30% of the team on a share basis, but together, they now form a large block in the Elden Ring studio.
Sixjoy, an internal division of Tencent, currently owns a 16.3% stake in FromSoftware, second only to Kadokawa, who currently leads the team. Sony Interactive follows closely with a 14.1% stake, so these are still minority stakes but are starting to hold some economic weight within the studio.
The combined investment was worth about 36.4 billion yen (about $260 million), so it’s a significant amount of money. In any event, Kadokawa remains the majority shareholder of FromSoftware and does not appear willing to sell more shares and lose its position of superiority at this time.
Considering the impressive revenues of Elden Ring, which currently has sales of 16.6 million, it is clear that the team has attracted many people. All of this fuels speculation about Sony’s possible expansionist targets at FromSoftware, but at the moment it’s unlikely that Kadokawa will decide to sell the team to PlayStation Studios, although the two companies have been business-related for some time.
Also, the presence of Tencent will make things a little more complicated as they are definitely the “third wheel” in this type of operation, but we are still waiting for developments on the matter.
