The German-Austrian company Koch Media was founded in 1994 and has grown steadily ever since. Gradually, other studios began to buy it, such as Milestone, Dambuster, Flying Wild Hog and Czech Warhorse. It became part of the Embracer Group conglomerate in 2018, and Prime Matter’s publishing arm was founded last year. However, the company is now changing its long-established name, according to Games Industry magazine, which also published an interview with managing director Klemens Kundratitz.
He claims that the company is entering a new chapter and he wanted it to be a modern, growing, ambitious and global company both externally and internally.
“The signal we are sending is that we are on a journey and it is good to give this journey a new name, a new visual form. New things are always interesting.” talks about changing the name and logo of Kundratitz.
However, this was not the only reason, the impracticality of the Koch surname, which may not be obvious to everyone, played a certain role in it. This often resulted in damage to, for example, “Transportation”.
Plaion’s new name is pronounced roughly as you’d expect, it’s basically a rewrite of “Play On” to better reflect the company’s new branding. And, as the name suggests, it puts games first, which Kundratitz confirms. In any case, this change also affected the film division of Koch Film, which is now called Plaion Pictures. For the rest of the Koch companies, everything remains the same. By the way, soft instead of hard was not chosen by chance, the letters “i” and “o” in the name stand for ones and zeros, which we associate with the digital world.
And why is the rebranding happening now? Kundratitz cites the Gamescom gaming event in Cologne at the end of August as a reason, which he says is a great opportunity to spread the word about the new game.
