According to NPD Group’s estimates, Hand Ring there will be a game best seller in the USA more in 2022 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The best-selling console will instead be the Nintendo Switch, with an impressive and very attractive lineup.
General spending in the gaming industry dropAfter record years due to the pandemic, it reached $55.5 billion, or -8.7% by 2021. The figure includes hardware, software and accessories expenses.
Part of the decline will be due to a complete reversion to the normal post-COVID emergency, with consumers having less money to spend on entertainment, having to go back to gas and fuel payments, and also higher prices. Other issues that will affect the final result are the stock of last generation consoles and some accessories like controllers and game delays.
According to NPD, top ten games (in alphabetical order): Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarok, Gotham Knights, Horizon: Forbidden West, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Madden NFL 23, NBA 2K23, Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Pokemon Scarlet / Violet.
As mentioned, at the top of the table should be Elden Ring, which will be the third game to beat a Call of Duty since 2009 (the other two were GTA V in 2013 and Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018). Regardless, Call of Duty is expected to prevail for the fourteenth consecutive year as the franchise.
Elden Ring has already been the top selling game in the US in the past twelve months. The latest data provided by Bandai Namco, i.e. 13 million copies sold, will definitely need to be updated given the continued success of the game.
Speaking of hardware, the market has yet to return to normal due to stock issues plaguing the PS5 and Xbox Series X in particular. The unit shortage should continue through 2023 at least.
As mentioned earlier, the Nintendo Switch will be the best-selling console, but it’s not taken for granted that it will generate the most revenue (NPD hasn’t revealed itself too much at this point). Xbox Series will be the only platform to see sales increase in 2022 compared to 2021.
Regarding games, spending on console, PC and mobile games will decline and subscription-only services will grow. Accessories will also drop, let’s see how much.
