Report from the Prague Championships

This weekend, June 18th and 19th, O2 Universe hosted an event called Prague Champs, the largest Czech League of Legends tournament. Such a large, purely gaming event, which would not be accompanied, for example, by a fair, has not been in our country for a long time and it has become a real holiday for LoLka fans.

Thanks to the fans

One of the organizers, Ladislav Dyntar (founder of eSuby and Good Game), described the event primarily as a thank you to the fans, but also as an attempt to raise the Czech sports scene higher and get closer to the West. Thanks to the partnership between Mastercard (co-organizer of the tournament) and Riot Games, which allows MC to use all the “assets”, the O2 universe managed to create a unique stage, achieving the quality of official events from Riot Games, of course on a more modest scale. A stage with moving LED screens 22 meters wide and over 5 meters high, complete with great sound and video production, gave several thousand fans a magnificent spectacle.

Fight for the trophy

The semi-finals and finals of the weekend tournament were preceded by an open qualifier for 100 amateur teams who were given the chance to shine and compete against Czech League of Legends pros. None of the amateur teams managed to qualify for the semi-finals, but even so, it was an unprecedented opportunity not only for the players, but also for the fans, who could watch the qualifiers online on twitch.tv.

In the semi-finals, 4 of our professional Czech teams met in bo5 fights – Dynamo Eclot vs. Sinners and eSuba vs. Entropy. The atmosphere was great from the first match. Fans chanted loudly after each successful performance of one of the teams, so goosebumps went not only among those present. We have seen close games such as the second semi-final game between the Sinners and Dynamo Eclot where the Sinners managed to get back into the game after a bad start. Although in the end it wasn’t enough for them to win, the spectacle was definitely spectacular.

The atmosphere was great from the first match.

The winners of the semi-final duels, the Dynamo-Eklot and Entropic teams, met in the Sunday final. It was an incredibly explosive and exciting series that was eventually dominated by the Entropiq team 3:1 and won the top prize of CZK 100,000. The winning team also received a trophy designed for the tournament by sculptor Roman Kvita. The trophy is intertwined with the League of Legends theme, and although one of the smallest in size, it is said to weigh a whopping 20kg.

What happened next?

A great entertainment and the final of the whole tournament was a friendly match between the winner of the Prague championship, team Entropiq, and the French team Gamers Origin, which has been among the best French League of Legends since 2011 and has already noted several successes in the international arena. On paper, the French team is definitely stronger, so it was a test for Entropiq to see if they could think of international competition. The imbalance of power in the end was indeed noticeable, but even so, both teams presented a hilarious spectacle.

On paper, the French team is definitely stronger.

Throughout the weekend, of course, there was also an accompanying program – cosplayers, event partner stands, board games, a photo corner, an area with gaming PCs from CZC, where visitors played – something other than League of Legends, or an FPV drone simulator (view from first person), where those who wish could try themselves as a pilot of high-speed drones.

Many well-known Czech influencers and streamers did not miss the Prague Championship. Others included ArcadeBulls, Deethane, Xnapy, Herdyn, Czechcloud, Idyiom, Charmie and others. Thus, the audience had the opportunity to “catch” a photo with their favorite between individual fights.

Next time

As a League of Legends fan, I have to see what the organizers have managed to put together and sincerely hope we see more events like this. Nothing compares to an atmosphere full of arenas of fans singing and cheering for their favorite teams. The representatives of the organizers themselves mentioned that in the future we can expect new events, this time in the larger O2 arena. We have no other choice but to wait and hope.
