A Windows 11 update was accidentally deployed to unsupported devices, raising questions about the operating system’s strict TPM requirements. Dubbed “Sun Valley 2,” the first major operating system was inadvertently installed on nearly every machine registered with the Windows Insider Program, but Microsoft insists the bug was a mistake.
On Reddit, users share evidence of a Windows 11 update lockout resulting in incompatible builds receiving an as-yet-unreleased redesign (via Techradar). User Clean-Application130 highlights a message that your Intel Skylake Gaming PC now meets the minimum requirements even though the processor does not meet Microsoft TPM standards.
The update has been removed and Microsoft says it is investigating the situation. The software giant also insists that its requirements haven’t changed, but the quirkiness of the implementation suggests that the TPM’s limitations aren’t explicitly due to incompatibilities. This does not mean that you should install Windows 11 on an unsupported computer, as there may be security issues when it comes to workarounds.
Microsoft says that PC users get to grips with Windows 11 faster than Windows 10, but its TPM requirements act as a barrier to entry if you have an older installation. Naturally, some enthusiasts will be nervous about an increase in the operating system, especially if it affects the machine’s ability to increase frame rates. However, the new OS is packed with gaming goodies like the DirectStorage API and automatic HDR capabilities.
