Multiplayer Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will take the reins from Vanguard as a first-person shooter for deathmatch fans this year, and developer Infinity Ward says it wants to step up the chaos this time. The studio’s experience with Call of Duty: Warzone has shown how multiplayer has been approached this year, and looks to encourage the new styles of play seen in a Battle Royale game.

Modern Warfare II multiplayer will feature new player movements and gadgets designed to support new styles of play. A new dive has been added to Infinity Ward that is attached to a slide – press and hold the slide down to turn it into a dive which can launch the player through a window or into the water headfirst to get out of the line of fire faster at the cost of having a weapon ready.

Another new dodge mechanic is hover, which allows players to grab onto certain edges and push their weapon forward without exposing their entire figure to enemy fire. Water will play a big role this year, with new systems created to provide underwater camouflage and the effects of water on bullet speed.

Modern Warfare II’s multiplayer mode will also feature a plethora of vehicles and new mechanics for them. Players will be able to lean out of truck windows and climb onto rooftops. When attacking vehicles, it will be possible to knock down doors or puncture tires. Infinity Ward adds transport helicopters and amphibious vehicles for use with new aquatic technology.

New terrain improvements and new gadgets will expand the possibilities of Modern Warfare II. A tactical camera provides an overview of your entire team, and a new armor-piercing projectile pierces through walls, launching explosives at anything on the other side. There’s also an inflatable infantry decoy straight out of Metal Gear Solid.

In Gunsmith, weapons will unlock as branches on a “family tree”, so players will start with a starting machine gun or assault rifle and unlock additional weapons on that particular platform as they progress through their ranking measurement. .

Finally, Modern Warfare II and the next version of Warzone will share the same engine, and both will feature Activision’s Ricochet anti-cheat system from day one.
