The new game My Time at Sandrock is skyrocketing up the Steam user charts, approaching 20,000 concurrent players traveling through the wilderness and exploring the life simulation game. A spiritual successor to Pathea Games’ My Time at Portia, My Time at Sandrock is a Stardew Valley-like game that challenges you to build a town and bond with the locals along the way. It’s a pretty impressive debut for an open-world game that launched on Steam Early Access yesterday (May 26). Stardew Valley’s player count is hovering around 30,000 concurrent farmers this year, so Pathea Games can be happy with its performance for now.
At the time of this writing, reviews on Steam are currently, on average, “mostly positive”, with reviewers generally saying the game feels like an improvement over My Time at Portia. Although several reviewers note that they found bugs, people seem happy with the developer’s response to documentation and resolution of common problems.
In addition to exploring and befriending the locals, My Time at Sandrock features a more advanced third-person combat system than Stardew Valley players might be used to, with spectacular melee combos and over-the-shoulder shots. There are also many mini-games, including mining, sandboarding, and dancing to get into the action with other Sandrock residents.
