PS5 will eventually support resolution 1440p with updates to console firmware, but apparently this option Does not support VRRAs indicated by a small star in the official statement posted by Sony on the PlayStation blog.
As previously reported, Sony is about to launch a beta of new PS5 features that will be introduced via a firmware update.
The beta is not available in Italy (supported countries are the US, UK, Canada, Japan, Germany, and France), but obviously the features of this update will soon be implemented by all PS5s around the world as they enter the general rollout phase.
Among the information about 1440p resolution, we can also see the message: “Requires a TV or monitor compatible with 1440p output. Results may depend on the game used. Please note: VRR on PS5 supports 1080p and 4K video output. 1440p”. So by choosing video output at 1440p, variable refresh rate disabled automatically from PS5.
It’s not certain reason The reason for this limitation: The HDMI databand explicitly allows you to watch 1440p with VRR in both the 2.0 and 2.1 protocols, so it’s hard to say why this decision was made. Since this is a feature still in beta, it’s likely that Sony plans to run further tests before implementing VRR. On the other hand, the latter has become a feature of the newer PS5 and perhaps needs to be “balanced” more.
