Gamescom 2024: Impressions from playing Reanimal

“Little Nightmares” by another name, but does it even matter?

Together with our partner Česká spořitelna we are launching the largest European gaming event.

This year at Gamescom we had such a unique experience: in the halls of the Cologne exhibition center you could find two incredibly similar games. The first is Little Nightmares 3, which we already wrote about, the third part of the acclaimed series, which was taken over by the studio Supermassive. The original developers from the Swedish studio Tarsier decided to go the way of new brands, but Reanimal, as their project is called, is very similar to their previous work. However, instead of Bandai Namco, it is published by THQ Nordic.

In Reanimal, you take on the role of two siblings, a girl and a boy (though you only control one), who are trying to escape a scary island. It’s full of strange animals, and while I met what looked like a regular pig early in the demo, there’s at least one mutant waiting for us, as we already know from the trailer.

I would focus on the monsters because their design is one of the main strengths of this game. The animals and other enemies you encounter are genuinely scary and a little unsettling. I only got to see a few of them in the demo, but all of the monsters were great.

It’s not just the monster designs that stand out visually, the overall graphics are also very nice and heavily stylized, very similar to Little Nightmares, especially on the main characters. The game handles dark areas very well, and while I complained about the rather empty environments in Little Nightmares 3, there was danger lurking around every corner. Combined with the excellent sound, the atmosphere was really strong.

But the extraordinary atmosphere here comes at the expense of almost every gameplay element. While Little Nightmares 3 at least added some interesting mechanics, Reanimal, at least in this demo, was all about walking or running, with only one time requiring me to find a key. The passages where you’re running from a monster are genuinely tense, but I’d still appreciate more in terms of gameplay.

On the other hand, it’s good that these two very similar games are at least somewhat different from each other. What Reanimal is trying to do is brilliant, and as a few hours of intense horror, it could work very well. But of course, it all depends on whether the sample size was representative enough and whether the game can maintain that pace over time.

In any case, it has a great tread, and Little Nightmares fans have something to look forward to. Especially if you find a co-op partner, unlike LN3, it will be available not only online but also locally. You will still enjoy the game even alone, since the AI, at least in the demo, worked without problems.

Reanimal will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. We don’t know the release date yet.
