I consider myself a big fan of history, so I was very pleasantly surprised by the announcement of “The Last Train Home”, because this chapter of the Czechoslovak soldiers’ activities abroad, of course, is not actively brought to the fore. I was very eager to try something from the developers Ashborne Games, and I think it was worth it. But you will learn more in the following paragraphs of our gaming impressions.

The train represents everything for you in Last Train Home

My whole adventure started on a train, or rather, in it, because I had to explore the surrounding estates, and who else should do it if not a bunch of my determined warriors. As soon as the tutorial was over, I immediately grabbed my group and, as in other tactical RTS, went on an adventure with them. To be honest, I was very surprised that “Last Train Home” offered me a very specific dubbing. In addition to the Czech voices, I also had the opportunity to listen to Slovak announcers. However, this was not an unpleasant surprise, quite the opposite. Ours are rarely heard in games. The presence of this element significantly added to the overall atmosphere, and it is even recommended to activate it, which I understand perfectly well after playing the demo.

The story of Last Train Home, or at least what I saw of it, is pretty grim. It unabashedly shows the horrors of war. That’s why you often don’t meet anyone who treats you well on your travels. In short, the soldiers are evil, and you’re a threat to the common people. And I’m not even talking about the Red Army, for whom my train was a thorn in the side from the beginning to the end of my journey. As a true military leader, I initially relied on neutrality during the elections, but it couldn’t be maintained forever. Finally, a fight broke out.

The battles in Last Train Home take place on strategic maps. That is, clashes, as well as the reconnaissance that usually precedes them. The group with which you travel across strategic maps evokes memories of commandos. With it, you will always have enough space to collect raw materials and, perhaps, explore nearby areas in order to find the most advantageous position before the upcoming battle with enemies. Cover work is very important here. Also important is the correct use of game classes. Soldiers are divided into different roles, among which there is no shortage of a scout, a machine gunner or a private soldier operating a bayonet, with which he pierces the enemy’s belly.

However, the red power was not the only problem I encountered during the game. There were also many difficult moments. Once the engine broke down, another time the hunt in a small forest did not live up to my expectations, where one of the characters was injured. The cherry on the cake was the choice I had to make during the drive through the countryside. I really liked the fact that individual characters go through development and from time to time get some injuries. Thus, a newbie sometimes enters the battle as a blank slate, without a wider range of abilities, but does not suffer from any physical defect of beauty.

As for the actual movement around the map, there are two ways. The main tool of your group is, of course, the train, which carries food, ammunition, and generally provides support to your people. However, you do not have to use it all the time. The squad can move on its own, so if you run out of coal, you can always cope with the situation for at least a while. However, in the long run, without a car and a bunch of wagons, this is impossible, because soldiers are still people, despite their great endurance.

Last Train Home’s ambitions are clear

I was very pleasantly surprised by the demo version of Last Train Home. It offered me everything I expect from representatives of this genre. I got my hands on a very successful tactical strategy with elements of survival. It is able to impress not only with the processing of the game world and the presentation of the story, but also with tactical battles taking place in real time, and above all with the voice acting containing Czech, Slovak and Russian coverage. In my opinion, dubbing will be one of the essential factors of this project, which has great ambitions. Frankly, I can’t wait to get back on the train and go with my boys and girls to Siberia, full of merciless red enemies. Last Train Home is coming to PC. The exact release date of the game has not yet been announced. However, the game should appear on Steam later this year.
