If there’s one thing an indie game is guaranteed to pay for, it’s being unoriginal, imitation, and lacking in originality. Apparently, developers Slow Bros. don’t have that problem. In a fully loaded demo, they present their epic adventure game Harold Halibut, which impresses with its hand-modeled and animated world and unconventional premise.
The term “Adventure” is a bit of a misnomer, at least for the first hour and a half that the demo offers to try out. After all, the authors only define the title as story gameYou’ll be granting wishes to your friends on what was originally a spaceship and is now underwater, but most of them will be limited to walking back and forth. Plus, the title is very talkative, so if the story and narrative aren’t your thing, you might want to look elsewhere.
However, this story has an interesting beginning. Slowly, but interestingly. Harold is a handyman in the local “town”, a bit of a janitor, but also an assistant to the chief scientist. In the demo, we mainly solve the problems of the ship’s inhabitants with his help, but several larger lines are developed.
The most impressive thing is the visual style. Hand-crafted characters and locations combined with impressive animations remind us of the high quality of the production, for example, a number of model animations, although in this case it is mostly wood, so it is more like Fimfárum. I already really liked the music, which is really hard to describe, but it is playful and perfectly emphasizes the atmosphere of a slightly seedy society locked in the depths.
You can probably tell by now that I found nothing wrong with the demo in terms of what you can see and hear, other than a few technical niggles. I want to see and hear more in the full game, which will be out on multiple platforms later this year. However, while the developers haven’t promised any puzzles or, God forbid, action, I would appreciate a little more actual gameplay over time. Even after an hour and a half, I was getting a little tired of constantly running after dialogue.
