Olympic Esports Series 2023, Nigel Tan wins virtual taekwondo competition

Young taekwondo athlete from Singapore. Nigel Tan won the first event Virtual Taekwondo until the final stages Olympic eSports Series 2023 at home, beating compatriot Natalie Thor, who wore full Singaporean colours, in the final.

In the game, which featured taekwondo in virtual reality, players wore headsets and motion tracking systems on their arms and shins. The goal of the game was to perform kicks to deplete an opponent’s health bar, with the ability to stun them and render them unable to move for four seconds. The game took place on equal terms, regardless of gender, age, abilities and physical differences.

The event featured 16 competitors – eight Olympic taekwondo legends and eight young local athletes – with Tan and Thor knocking out legends Nur Tatar (Turkey) and Wu Jingyu (People’s Republic of China) will advance to the finals.

Tan and Thor split the first two matches of the best-of-three final, and in the deciding match Thor appeared to have the advantage in terms of health, but Tan kept his cool and landed a combination of kicks to win 2–1.


Two Olympic legends, two-time champion Wu and two-time medalist Tatarin, then competed for bronze in third place. Wu, a Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic champion, unleashed a series of quick kicks to the head to deplete Tatara’s health and stun her opponent in the opening match. The Chinese then landed several kicks to stun Tatar again and finish the third place match 2-0.
