Yuji HoriyaLead author, designer and screenwriter of the Dragon Quest series, received a Japanese government award for being the first game developer. Most notably, he received the Order of the Rising Sun, the third highest honor in Japan, with the top two honors reserved for politicians and members of the imperial family. The Order of the Rising Sun is awarded by the Prime Minister on behalf of the Emperor for outstanding achievements, including the enrichment of Japanese culture and technology.

“I’ve been involved in games for quite a long time, about 40 years. But it’s not just me. This is a credit to everyone who helped me all the time, the staff I worked with and the players who supported me. This shows that improving, trying new things and working hard pays off,” Horii told Japanese broadcaster FNN TV.

Yuji Horii began developing games in 1983. For Enix he created Love Match: Tennis. He first moved from sports to adventure games, but in 1986 he created a role-playing game. Dragon Quest – in North America the series was published until 2005 for licensing reasons under the name Dragon Warrior. Horii has worked on all of the Dragon Quest games and is also working on the upcoming expansion. Dragon Quest XII: Flame of Fate.
